Oman overview

This album is from a journey around Oman in 2014. One of the most memorable experiences, seeing green turtles laying eggs on the beach under moonlight, could not be photographed and is not covered here.

Muscat

Muscat is an extensive city formed from the old Muscat walled city, the fishing village of Matruh with its souq, and the commercial centre of Ruwi.

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the third largest mosque in the world. Must sees in the mosque include the Swarovski crystal chandelier, the second largest hand made persian carpet in the world and the marble panelling.

Jabal Shams

Oman’s highest mountain, Jabal Shams (Mountain of the Sun; 3075m), is best known not for its peak but for the view into the spectacularly deep Wadi Ghul lying alongside it. The straight-sided Wadi Ghul is known locally as the Grand Canyon of Arabia as it exposes vertical cliffs of 1000m and more.

Forts and Architecture

There are over 500 forts and castles in Oman. Complemented by a number of modern buildings the architecture of Oman forms a diverse set of buildings; from crumbling adobe houses to modern concrete government buildings.
